Air gap
Open vertical space between the waste pipe outlet and the receptor flood rim, commonly 2x the pipe diameter with about a 1 in minimum

- The vertical open space between a supply outlet and a fixture's flood rim that stops backflow at the fixture
- A physical open vertical space, at least twice the pipe diameter, between the supply and a receiving vessel
